Seen from the access stairs to the Pretorium Tower<\/a><\/strong> of Tarragona<\/strong>, the sculpture of Caesar Augustus<\/a><\/strong> (63ac-14dc), with the Mare Nostrum<\/strong> in the background, becomes majestic and full of symbolism. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

No wonder the linkage between the Roman emperor and T\u00e0rraco<\/a><\/strong> became extremely important for the city. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite his legacy not being immediate, the role of T\u00e0rraco<\/strong>, in the context of the Empire, evolved, got stronger and experienced a growing on what its facilities and infrastructures were concerned.

An excellent climate, a location that provides protection from the Mediterranean<\/strong> winds, and its history connected to the Roman Empire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These could have been key factors in the benefit of turning Tarraco<\/strong> into the residence of the Emperor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Never before had a sovereign decided to live beyond the walls of the Empire\u2019s capital city. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caesar Augustus<\/strong> did so between 26 and 25BC, after an exhausting trip to Cantabria<\/strong>, where the climate got him sick.


<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caesar Augustus and the Tarraco of the time<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The T\u00e0rraco<\/strong> that welcomed Caesar Augustus <\/strong>was erecting the Forum of the Colony<\/a><\/strong> and also, maybe, the Aqueduct<\/a><\/strong> (aka Pont del Diable).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the Part Alta would have been the most probable location for a Roman camp. \u201cNobody can really tell where Caesar Augustus<\/strong><\/em> lodged\u201d, says Mag\u00ed Seritjol<\/strong>, manager of the T\u00e0rraco Viva Festival<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, it is said that he would have probably done so at the Part Alta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or even on a nearby village such as the vil\u00b7la dels Munts<\/a><\/strong>, in Altafulla<\/strong>, which would become home to the Emperor Adrian<\/strong> a few decades later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite Caesar Augustus<\/strong>\u2019s influence in Tarraco<\/strong> cannot be found directly on the construction of facilities or infrastructures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paco Tovar<\/strong>, historian and co-owner of the tourist guide company Argos Serveis Culturals<\/strong><\/a>, states that it is inevitable to attribute Tarraco<\/strong>\u2019s transformation and improvement to the Emperor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A crucial push which allowed several constructions such as the Amphitheatre<\/strong><\/a>, the Circus<\/strong><\/a> or the actual Temple of Augustus<\/strong><\/a>, below the surface of Tarragona\u2019s Cathedral<\/strong><\/a>, to be brought to reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The legacy of Caesar Augustus<\/strong> is still very present in the city.

Celebrations around Caesar Augustus<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Now, at the time of the second millennium of his death; a historical fact that arrives after years of restorations of Roman heritage in T\u00e0rraco<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some work is developed, mostly by the T\u00e0rraco Viva Festival<\/strong>, in order to make the history and the role the Roman society had onto our culture widely known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is actually T\u00e0rraco Viva<\/strong>, due next May by means of a commemorative special edition, which has created a program that will try to divulge and rediscover the leading figure of Caesar Augustus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“He was an enthralling emperor in the public sphere<\/em> \u2013he ruled the Empire for four decades-, but also in terms of the society, the culture\u2026<\/em>\u201d Mag\u00ed Seritjol<\/strong> points out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, highlights the personage \u201cand how he was bewitched by masks and they way he would use them on a daily basis working as a politician and on his personal relationships<\/em>\u201d.

The mysticism<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Now, if you want to find out more about Caesar Augustus<\/strong> other than stones, the historian Paco Tovar<\/strong> dares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

States that the \u201ccult towards Caesar Augustus<\/strong> has been present in the city\u2019s history every 23rd September<\/em> \u2013Santa Tecla\u2019s Festivity<\/strong><\/a>-, and also on 19th August<\/em> \u2013day of his death-, time when Tarragona<\/strong> holds the so-called Sant Mag\u00ed<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s small festivity<\/em>\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two dates, two coincidences?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tovar<\/strong> says \u201cit could be that Christians were in search of an excuse to celebrate the Roman culture<\/em>\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Answering to the same question, Seritjol<\/strong> smiles and adds, \u201cWho knows? Maybe\u2026<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Either way, Augustus<\/strong> is still seducing two thousand years after his death. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And there is no doubt he will continue being responsible for many stories that, just like curious tourists, we\u2019ll be forced to follow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is why we are going to be following the steps of Augustus<\/strong> every month this year on the Tarragona Experience Blog<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And we\u2019ll do it with a number of reports that will bring light to this exciting character, this politician; but above all, these reports will make us have a good time by means of his relation with the history of this city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
