in the empire of Caesar Augustus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Seen from the access stairs to the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roman_Forum_(Tarragona)\">Pretorium Tower<\/a><\/strong> of <strong>Tarragona<\/strong>, the sculpture of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Augustus\">Caesar Augustus<\/a><\/strong> (63ac-14dc), with the <strong>Mare Nostrum<\/strong> in the background, becomes majestic and full of symbolism. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No wonder the linkage between the Roman emperor and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tarraco\">T\u00e0rraco<\/a><\/strong> became extremely important for the city. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite his legacy not being immediate, the role of <strong>T\u00e0rraco<\/strong>, in the context of the Empire, evolved, got stronger and experienced a growing on what its facilities and infrastructures were concerned.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tarragonaexperience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/cesar-augusto-tarraco-681x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Statue of Caesar Augustus\" class=\"wp-image-10189\" width=\"511\" height=\"768\" \/><figcaption><br><br><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>An excellent climate, a location that provides protection from the <strong>Mediterranean<\/strong> winds, and its history connected to the Roman Empire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These could have been key factors in the benefit of turning <strong>Tarraco<\/strong> into the residence of the Emperor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Never before had a sovereign decided to live beyond the walls of the Empire\u2019s capital city. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Caesar Augustus<\/strong> did so between 26 and 25BC, after an exhausting trip to <strong>Cantabria<\/strong>, where the climate got him sick.<br><br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Caesar Augustus and the Tarraco of the time<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>T\u00e0rraco<\/strong> that welcomed <strong>Caesar Augustus <\/strong>was erecting the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tarragona.cat\/patrimoni\/museu-historia\/en\/monuments\/colonial-forum\">Forum of the Colony<\/a><\/strong> and also, maybe, the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pont_de_les_Ferreres\">Aqueduct<\/a><\/strong> (aka Pont del Diable).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the Part Alta would have been the most probable location for a Roman camp. \u201c<em>Nobody can really tell where <strong>Caesar Augustus<\/strong><\/em> lodged\u201d, says <strong>Mag\u00ed Seritjol<\/strong>, manager of the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tarracoviva.com\">T\u00e0rraco Viva Festival<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it is said that he would have probably done so at the Part Alta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or even on a nearby village such as the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Villa_dels_Munts\">vil\u00b7la dels Munts<\/a><\/strong>, in <strong>Altafulla<\/strong>, which would become home to the Emperor <strong>Adrian<\/strong> a few decades later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite <strong>Caesar Augustus<\/strong>\u2019s influence in <strong>Tarraco<\/strong> cannot be found directly on the construction of facilities or infrastructures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Paco Tovar<\/strong>, historian and co-owner of the tourist guide company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.argostarragona.eu\/4\/\"><strong>Argos Serveis Culturals<\/strong><\/a>, states that it is inevitable to attribute <strong>Tarraco<\/strong>\u2019s transformation and improvement to the Emperor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A crucial push which allowed several constructions such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tarragona_Amphitheatre\"><strong>Amphitheatre<\/strong><\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tarragona.cat\/patrimoni\/museu-historia\/en\/monuments\/roman-circus\"><strong>Circus<\/strong><\/a> or the actual <a href=\"http:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Templo_de_Augusto_(Tarragona)\"><strong>Temple of Augustus<\/strong><\/a>, below the surface of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catedraldetarragona.com\/?lang=en\"><strong>Tarragona\u2019s Cathedral<\/strong><\/a>, to be brought to reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The legacy of <strong>Caesar Augustus<\/strong> is still very present in the city.<br><br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Celebrations around Caesar Augustus<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, at the time of the second millennium of his death; a historical fact that arrives after years of restorations of Roman heritage in <strong>T\u00e0rraco<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some work is developed, mostly by the <strong>T\u00e0rraco Viva Festival<\/strong>, in order to make the history and the role the Roman society had onto our culture widely known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is actually <strong>T\u00e0rraco Viva<\/strong>, due next May by means of a commemorative special edition, which has created a program that will try to divulge and rediscover the leading figure of <strong>Caesar Augustus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<em>He was an enthralling emperor in the public sphere<\/em> \u2013he ruled the Empire for four decades-, <em>but also in terms of the society, the culture\u2026<\/em>\u201d <strong>Mag\u00ed Seritjol<\/strong> points out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, highlights the personage \u201c<em>and how he was bewitched by masks and they way he would use them on a daily basis working as a politician and on his personal relationships<\/em>\u201d.<br><br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The mysticism<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, if you want to find out more about <strong>Caesar Augustus<\/strong> other than stones, the historian <strong>Paco Tovar<\/strong> dares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>States that the \u201c<em>cult towards <strong>Caesar Augustus<\/strong> has been present in the city\u2019s history every 23rd September<\/em> \u2013<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Santa_Tecla_Festival\"><strong>Santa Tecla\u2019s Festivity<\/strong><\/a>-, <em>and also on 19th August<\/em> \u2013day of his death-, <em>time when <strong>Tarragona<\/strong> holds the so-called <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint_Maginus\"><strong>Sant Mag\u00ed<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s small festivity<\/em>\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two dates, two coincidences?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tovar<\/strong> says \u201c<em>it could be that Christians were in search of an excuse to celebrate the Roman culture<\/em>\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Answering to the same question, <strong>Seritjol<\/strong> smiles and adds, \u201c<em>Who knows?
