Photo: Rafael L\u00f3pez-Monn\u00e9<br><br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The spirituality of Holy Week culminates on the evening of Good Friday with the procession of the Holy Burial, documented since 1550, in which nineteen <em>passos<\/em> take part. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the departure, the <em>Armats<\/em> go from church to church to collect each of the <em>passos<\/em> in one of the most traditional events of a festival that has been declared a <strong>Traditional Festival of National Interest<\/strong> by the Government of Catalonia.<br><br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>May: a journey of 2,000 years back in time with Tarraco Viva<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tarragona not only offers the chance to marvel at its monumental Roman legacy: you can also see it, feel it, and hence understand it better than ever. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the aim of the annual historical re-enactment known as&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tarracoviva.com\/\"><strong>Tarraco Viva<\/strong><\/a>, which for a fortnight in May revives the ancient inhabitants of Tarraco.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized size-full wp-image-6445\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarragonaexperience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/TarracoViva.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tarragonaexperience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/TarracoViva.jpg\" alt=\"Romans at Tarraco Viva\" style=\"width:738px\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tarraco Viva Festival. Photo: Manel Antol\u00ed (RV Edipress)<br><br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The intention is to offer a <strong>portrait of life during Roman times<\/strong>, with the utmost accuracy endorsed by historical documentation as its leitmotif.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During this very special period, life as it was two thousand years ago reawakens beneath the vaults of the Circus and the area around the Roman walls is transformed into a military encampment.<br><br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>June: a stroll around Modernism<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The month with the longest daylight hours is the best time to stroll through the centre of Tarragona and discover what is possibly the city\u2019s least-known heritage: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarragonaturisme.cat\/en\/routes\/modernist-route\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Modernisme<\/strong><\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Rambla Nova<strong> there are still a number of fa\u00e7ades<\/strong> featuring this popular style (also known as Catalan art nouveau) by architects such as Ramon Salas and Josep Maria Pujol de Barber\u00e0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized size-full wp-image-6459\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarragonaexperience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/balcon-mediterraneo-modernismo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"996\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tarragonaexperience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/balcon-mediterraneo-modernismo.jpg\" alt=\"Mediterranean Balcony of Tarragona\" class=\"wp-image-9930\" style=\"width:738px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tarragonaexperience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/balcon-mediterraneo-modernismo.jpg 996w, https:\/\/www.tarragonaexperience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/balcon-mediterraneo-modernismo-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tarragonaexperience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/balcon-mediterraneo-modernismo-768x486.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 996px) 100vw, 996px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Mediterranean Balcony of Tarragona. Photo: Manel Antol\u00ed (RV Edipress)<br><br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The rest of the city also has many hidden treasures: several works by the leading Modernist architect Josep Maria Jujol (such as the original Metropol Theatre), a Central Market that has been returned to its former glory following the restoration in 2017 of its wrought ironwork and the <em>trencad\u00eds<\/em> (ceramic tile mosaics) in their original style, and even the <strong>first documented work by Antoni Gaud\u00ed<\/strong>.<br><br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>July: a competition full of light and colour<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the first week of July, the night skies of Tarragona are a spectacle to behold. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>\u201cCiutat de Tarragona\u201d International Firework Competition<\/strong>&nbsp;goes back many years (1990) and has become one of the most iconic events in the Mediterranean. <br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized wp-image-6465\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarragonaexperience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/concurso-fuegos-artificiales-tarragona.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"534\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tarragonaexperience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/concurso-fuegos-artificiales-tarragona.jpg\" alt=\"Fireworks\" class=\"wp-image-9933\" style=\"width:738px;height:512px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tarragonaexperience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/concurso-fuegos-artificiales-tarragona.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.tarragonaexperience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/concurso-fuegos-artificiales-tarragona-300x209.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tarragona International Firework Competition. Photo: Manel Antol\u00ed.<br><br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For four nights, firework companies compete at Punta del Miracle to offer spectators the very best of their pyrotechnic art, and the winner is charged with putting on the firework display for the town\u2019s main festival of Santa Tecla. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To round off the extravaganza, the<strong> Restaurant Association of the Part Alta <\/strong>offers&nbsp;tasting sessions&nbsp;on Passeig de les Palmeres, a fantastic spot to watch the competition while savouring Tarragona\u2019s cuisine.<br><br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>August: fifteen kilometers of coastline to discover<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With fifteen kilometres of coastline, there is a wide variety of beautiful&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarragonaturisme.cat\/en\/beaches\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>beaches in Tarragona<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;whose appeal is not restricted to the summer months. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much of the city\u2019s natural appeal can be found alongside the Mediterranean, specifically the Anella Verda (Green Ring), including such <strong>glorious spots<\/strong> as the beaches of Platja Llarga and Punta de la M\u00f3ra. <br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized size-full wp-image-6449\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarragonaexperience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/cala-fonda-waikiki-tarragona.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"535\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tarragonaexperience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/cala-fonda-waikiki-tarragona.jpg\" alt=\"Cala Fonda\" class=\"wp-image-9936\" style=\"width:738px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tarragonaexperience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/cala-fonda-waikiki-tarragona.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.tarragonaexperience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/cala-fonda-waikiki-tarragona-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tarragonaexperience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/cala-fonda-waikiki-tarragona-768x514.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cala Fonda or Waikiki. Photo: Alberich Fot\u00f2grafs.<br><br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The hiking path<\/strong> that runs around the city offers the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in a unique protected natural area, the Bosc de la Marquesa, which is also the gateway to some of the city\u2019s most beautiful coves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And let\u2019s not forget the happy <strong>association between medieval heritage and the Mediterranean Sea <\/strong>offered by the Castle of Tamarit and its surrounding beaches.<br><br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>September: experience Santa Tecla like a Tarragona native!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tarragona takes to the streets during the second half of September to take part in the festivities that local residents look forward to the whole year:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarragonaturisme.cat\/en\/events\/santa-tecla\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Santa Tecla<\/strong><\/a>. <br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Documented since the fourteenth century, the event <strong>has been designated a Festival of Tourist Interest<\/strong> by both the Catalan and Spanish governments and represents a truly participative outpouring of Tarragona society. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized size-full wp-image-6451\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarragonaexperience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/santa-tecla.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"581\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tarragonaexperience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/santa-tecla.jpg\" alt=\"Santa Tecla Festival in Tarragona celebration\" class=\"wp-image-9939\" style=\"width:738px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tarragonaexperience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/santa-tecla.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.tarragonaexperience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/santa-tecla-300x218.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tarragonaexperience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/santa-tecla-768x558.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Santa Tecla Festival in Tarragona.
