Al Pacino, Robert de Niro, Sofía Loren, Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt, Dustin Hoffman, Michael Jackson, David Bowie… Few celebrities have been able to fight back Greg Gorman’s camera (Kansas City, 1949), the Hollywood celebrity and big music stars photographer. Now, a selection of his works, true 20th century icons, are part of the exhibit A distinct vision taking place in the so-called Tinglado 1, in Moll de Costa, until April 5; a true honour for Tarragona.

The showing, opened yesterday February 5, by the very same Greg Gorman, gathers 250 pictures, and it is complemented by a series of nude and experimental photographs made around the United States. “In my opinion, photography is more successful when it’s not trying to answer every single question, so it leaves room for imagination”, says the artist. The exhibition opens from Tuesday to Saturday, 10am until 1pm & 4pm until 7pm; on Sunday and Bank Holidays, from 11am until 2pm.

Gorman, who studied photojournalism and cinema, started his professional career as photographer at the age of 18 in a Jimi Hendrix concert. Today, after almost fifty years, he is a master in photo art and black-and-white photography, on which he developed his own illumination and technique methods, known as the Gorman Method. The fact that he started at such young age, allowed him to picture a number of stars in their early stages.

On the other hand, the exhibition and the fact that he attended the opening have made it possible for Gorman to actually visit and get to know Tarragona. As he reported during the presentation, the artist was kindly surprised by the city, as well as by its life quality: “I don’t quite understand why, with this light, heritage and history, people don’t entirely believe they live in a extraordinary city”, he said. Man of an incredible simplicity and proximity, Gorman very soon connected with people and couldn’t help taking pictures with them and signing copies of the showing’s book-catalogue to those asking.

During his stay in the city, Greg Gorman will offer an exclusive vision of the exhibit, on Saturday morning (11am), a true master class for those interested in cinema, photography and art in general, for just 20€. Those willing to attend should formalize the attendance by sending an email to info@andreaeidenhammer.com or by getting in touch with Andrea Eidenhammer, the exhibition’s coordinator, at +34 605 378 440.

However, and as it was revealed during the showing, this will not be the last time Gorman visits Tarragona. In June, the Californian artist will return to the city, and will also travel to the Priorat area –he is a true wine lover– in order to conduct a seminary of international photographers. And who knows if the exhibition, the impact the destination and the seminary will have caused on Gorman, will make our city known among some of the celebrities he has immortalised, making them to experience all the city has to offer by themselves.
